27 September 2008 to 28 September 2008
Another great weekend in the bush, even if it was dry. We decided to do our old favorite again, namely the
Serendipity hike not far from Nylstroom. As it turned out, it was just the four of us on the hike, thats Petro,
Kerneels, Silvia and myself. It turned into a great weekend!
A glorious African sunrise in the bush!
The day turned out to be quite hot, but nevertheless very enjoyable.
The first day takes one up and down over the rolling hills.
Eventually we came to a nice shaded spot for a break.
One eventually comes to a long quite green valley along which the trail runs. There are usually pools of water to
be found in this part.
The last part before reaching the overnight hut takes one through some dense bush.
Just before the hut is a small cliff that one climbs up. The hut can be seen vaguely in the middle of the photo
at the top through the leaves of the trees.
A large supply of mattresses are available at the hut mainly for sleeping on the floor with. A gas burner and
cold showers are also there plus two braai places.
Unfortunately the place also needs some maintenance, with the front shade area collapsing. We came across a large
snake close by that may have a been a Cobra although we could not be sure. At least the problem of rats and mice
of previous years seems to have disappeared. One sees so few of these interesting creatures that it certainly
made our day.
During the night we had quite some wind as a cold front moved in, resulting in a cloudy Sunday. This was great as
the second day has quite a few climbs.
Some pools in one of the kloofs. Round about this point a bit of sun started coming through, but by now most of
the climbing was over. From here its maybe another three quarters of an hour back to base camp.
