20 August 2004 to 22 August 2004
This was something different from our normal hiking weekends. This was supposed
to be a weekend were we would try out the "what if" situations. What if someone broke a leg on a hike.
What if somesone got bitten by a snake etc, but also a fun weekend. Here we are having our
final briefing before setting of. No one knew what would happen when or where, so our acting
skills where also put to the test. I can see a few Oscar nominations coming up!
Sable Valley is not a very difficult hike and lends itself to this type of thing.
With rolling hills and gorges and even some streams that still had water in them even
though its was late winter.
Silvia was the first to "conk out", with what was diagnosed as "Heat stroke" by the
budding doctors. Well..we cant do worse than some of our local doctors!
Here she is enjoying being pampared!
The local "Royalty" enjoying the "pleasures" of life!
Patrick training to be a big time hiker!
Lunch in a river bed next to a giant fig tree.
One of the many pools. A bit cold in winter but some tried it!
Jean acting out her "bust leg" act.
Eventually we made it to the overnight hut after some of us got lost! Sometimes you dont
have to act! Anyway, the Sable Valley hut is quite comfortable and has a "donkey" for
hot water and showers, as well as a nice braai area.
Here is "yours truly" trying to braai eight kilos of Boerewors for the group.
Next morning we had a demonstration on what to take with on various types of hikes.
Here's Rob explaining why he hides ten meters of string and wire in his water bottle.
The true "hero's" of the weekend. Seeing who can "survive" the cold water longest!
