01 November 2008 to 02 November 2008
This time our hiking weekend turned eventful a bit earlier in that on the way to Golden Gate the car
developed mechanical problems. Just outside Villiers a wheel bearing started packing up. Eventually we managed
to limp into Bethlehem and the very helpful Delta dealer managed to fix the problem. After this mishap we
continued our journey to Golden Gate.
The first night was spent camping at the local campsite at Golden Gate.
Next morning we got off to a rather late start.
The day turned out to be very hot, but nevertheless absolutely enjoyable.
After the first hard climb a short break at a scenic rock overhang overlooking Golden Gate.
There had not been much rain yet and the veldt was looking rather dry.
The trail eventually turns into a valley into the back. Here a small stream still contained some water.
Along the way we came across a troop of Baboons.
The last stretch of the first day takes one across a long stretch of grassland.
Eventually we made it to the hut where a sorry sight greeted us.
The hut has fallen into absolute disrepair. The doors and windows don’t shut anymore. There were not enough
mattresses for everyone even though we asked a park official who came riding by on a horse to please get some
more. There was no rubbish bin. During the night we had a heck of a storm and the roof started coming off because
there where no more nails and wire holding down the corrugated iron roof sheeting. Kerneels climbed onto the roof
during the night and placed some rocks on it to prevent it from completely blowing off. It’s a real pity to see
this lovely hut going to the dogs like this, as there is absolutely no maintenance being done here!
Next morning we got going very early. Petro and Kerneels decided to try a different path which tuned out to be
somewhat off the correct track resulting in a bit of bundu-bashing to get back.
The second day contains quite a climb of about 750 meters up to Lesotho View.
Eventually we made it to the top. Here the view was magnificent due to the clear weather!
The path downwards is just as interesting with quite some spectacular views.
A section of the way down takes one across a ridge where we encountered gale force winds.
Nearly there! The last section of day two takes one past a dam and into a small valley with the camp site being just
on the other side. We certainly felt the aftereffects of this hike as both days were very hot and the trail is
not the easiest. Nevertheless we certainly enjoyed the trail!
